I did my own make-up,
Photographic Performance triptych, 2018
This work investigates drag culture and its relationship to female identity, in particular the “butch” female identity. It asks: Does drag depict female identity as material, something worn through make-up, dresses and stockings? Why is dressing up as female, as drag queens do, considered more entertaining than dressing up as male, as drag kings do? And can lesbians do make-up?
In the photographs, I do my own make-up, a performative gesture toward femininity. I do not succeed. I look like a clown.
