Balancing Act and Holding On is a photographic diptych in which I perform with a leg brace and calliper. The brace, newly made but unused, was intended for my mother, who has worn leg braces her entire life. These devices support her paralysed leg, keeping it straight or bent for sitting. Like the leg brace, I have supported my mum—helping her walk, acting as her walking stick during her decline. Now, as she uses a wheelchair, my role has shifted once again.
In the performance, I hold and balance the calliper, reflecting on the constantly evolving nature of a carer’s role. Caregiving is a continual act of juggling—balancing between holding on, offering support, and letting go.
