I’ll Follow You, Just in Case,
Performance with a walking support belt,
Kiosk, Holding Space Exhibition, 2018
I'll Follow You, Just in Case was reperformed at the opening of Rhythms of Care / RITMI SKRBI at Obrat Gallery, Maribor, Slovenia, in 2024.
I'll Follow You, Just in Case is a participatory performance in which I secure a transfer belt around a participant and accompany them as they move through the gallery. Borrowed from caregiving practice, the belt is typically used to support a person's mobility and safety. Within the performance, it becomes a tool for navigating space together.
The participant leads while I follow, remaining attentive to their pace, movements, and changing needs. Through this act of accompaniment, the work explores trust, dependence, vulnerability, and care as a relational exchange. The performance creates a subtle shadowing effect as our movements become interconnected, requiring constant negotiation and responsiveness.
Drawing on lived experiences of caregiving, the work examines the often-unseen labour of supporting another person. It challenges assumptions about independence and dependence, suggesting instead that care is a mutual process shaped by attentiveness, reciprocity, and embodied presence. By blurring the distinction between leading and following, the work proposes caregiving not as a one-way act of support, but as a shared and continually shifting relationship.
