Invisible Agent, Video Still, 2015.
The video performance was filmed over seven days, during which I packed and unpacked the boot of my car with my mother’s motorised wheelchair. The wheelchair extends her limbs while travelling within and out of the house. The wheelchair is a motorised machine: it is a transport device that holds the body in a sitting position. In this video, what is missing from the chair is its occupant. I am assembling and disassembling the chair as the only visible body.
When I take my mother out, she often isn’t addressed when she is paying for her items. This work speaks to the invisible bodies —the bodies that are not seen — and the labour associated with the body.
Both disability and care are invisible actions.
