Body says, No
Experimental Film Animation, 8:51 minutes, 2023
Body Says No is an experimental animated film that uses handcrafted miniatures to explore the tension between medical support and bodily autonomy. Through stop-motion sequences, assistive devices and medical aids become the film’s protagonists, highlighting the absence of the human body while questioning the environments built for “care.”
In this miniature world, mobility aids and equipment stand in for the body—supporting, constraining, and sometimes hurting it. The film exposes the impersonal and uncomfortable nature of these objects, challenging the idea that medical solutions are always accessible or humane. When the body “says no,” it resists not only pain, but also the limitations imposed by these structures. Ultimately, the devices become haunting portraits of the bodies they serve, evoking the unseen labour and emotional complexity of care and how we care for the body.
