Connecting Cahun,
Performative Appropriation Digital Photography, 2015
Photograph, Archival pigment print on cotton paper, 118.9 cm x 84.1 (unframed), Edition of 5 + 2 AP (4 editions left).
Knežević reenacts Claude Cahun’s gender-ambiguous, self-reflexive self-portrait as a snapshot of contemporary queer life in Sydney. Referencing Cahun’s mirrored image, Knežević reworks it to emphasize its peculiar refusal to see its own reflection. The direct gaze into the camera acknowledges the potency of the lens and the image in contemporary life—perhaps even overpowering the mirror as the primary site of self-reflection.
Images made for the Second Comings exhibition, Marrickville Garage Gallery.
